Agrinos Talks Biostimulants During Capitol Hill Visit

DAVIS, Calif. (Oct. 10, 2017)—Terry Stone, Agrinos vice president of regulatory affairs and sustainability, recently joined representatives from the Biostimulant Products Industry Alliance (BPIA) on Capitol Hill for a meeting with U.S. House and Senate senior staff members to discuss agricultural biostimulants.

Terry Stone, Agrinos vice president of regulatory and sustainability, joined representatives from the Biostimulant Products Industry Alliance (BPIA) on Capitol Hill for a meeting with U.S. House and Senate staff.

The biostimulant industry and BPIA are requesting that Congress acknowledge the benefits biostimulants can bring to agricultural production and further encourage their use. They are also requesting the development of regulatory standards and a specific regulatory path for bringing agricultural biostimulants to market.

“Defining biostimulants and establishing a clear regulatory path for their commercialization is crucial for continued innovation, development and adoption of these valuable inputs,” said Stone, who is also chairman of the BPIA Biostimulant Integration Committee. “Biostimulants are neither fertilizers nor pesticides, yet when applied to seeds, plants or the soil, they stimulate natural processes to enhance nutrient uptake and efficiency, tolerance to abiotic stress, crop quality and/or yield.”

Biostimulants increase the uptake and utilization of existing and applied nutrients while reducing the potential for off-farm nutrient runoff into rivers, lakes and streams, as well as reducing emission of greenhouse gasses.
